Between 2019 and 2023, the performance and music series DISAPPEARING BERLIN explored the spatial and atmospheric potential of a city in constant transformation. Iconic sites and architectures shaped by ongoing change were temporarily activated and reframed through performative and musical interventions. At the core of the project, as both artistic Setzung and structural principle, was the live moment of encounter – the interplay between performance, architecture, and audience.
The invited artists engaged in dialogue with both the historical layers and ruptures, as well as the contemporary transformations of Berlin’s urban spaces. Berlin was not merely a backdrop, but an active participant in the artistic situations: an environment whose specific spaces, rhythms, and histories generate impulses of their own. Each intervention thus became a situational re-production of space, in which the city asserts its own agency – not as a stage in the sense of a neutral background, but as a co-player, resonant body, and challenger of artistic practice.
Zwischen 2019 und 2023 erforschte die Performance- und Musikreihe DISAPPEARING BERLIN das räumliche und atmosphärische Potenzial einer Stadt im permanenten Wandel. Ikonische sowie von Veränderung geprägte Architekturen und Orte wurden temporär aktiviert und durch performative sowie musikalische Interventionen neu gerahmt. Als künstlerische Setzung und tragende Struktur des Projekts stand das Live-Moment der Begegnung – das Zusammenspiel von Performance, Architektur und Publikum – im Vordergrund.
Die eingeladenen Künstler*innen traten mit den historischen Schichtungen und Brüchen ebenso wie mit der gegenwärtigen Transformation der Berliner Stadträume in Dialog. Berlin war dabei nicht bloß Kulisse, sondern aktiver Bestandteil der künstlerischen Situationen: eine Umgebung, die mit ihren spezifischen Räumen, Rhythmen und Geschichten selbst Impulse setzt. Jede Intervention wurde so zu einer situativen Re-Produktion von Raum, in der die Stadt ihre eigene Wirkmacht entfaltet – nicht als Bühne im Sinne eines Hintergrunds, sondern als Mitspielerin, Resonanzkörper und Herausforderer künstlerischer Praxis.
